Exeter Chiropractor Mairi Dowlen DC

My journey into chiropractic began in my 20s. Whilst studying a BSc in Biomedical Sciences at Aberdeen University I decided to complete a Massage Diploma to experience a therapeutic application for the physiology, biochemistry and anatomy that I was studying on such a molecular level. Through this I realized that I loved working with people and touch and began to observe professionals around Aberdeen to discover how I could best use my degree towards a hands on holistic profession. I was introduced to Chiropractic through this investigation. I vividly remember observing one chiropractor, in this session he tested the arm strength of a lady that was obviously weak, he then adjusted an area and re tested the same muscle, which now appeared strong. To me this was incredible and brought up so many questions in relation to my degree at the time, how had this happened? what had he done that had caused such a significant change in her strength?. My mind was hooked. I graduated from Aberdeen and went straight into the Chiropractic BSc and MSc with the Anglo European College of Chiropractic in Bournemouth, graduating in 2004.
Since 2004 I have worked as a full time chiropractor in Cornwall and now in Devon. Since graduating and working with people I finally began to get regular care myself. Although I understood chiropractic I had never really let myself be helped by it. I had suffered with migraines and headaches since I was 3 years old and throughout my life I had taken medication from everyday painkillers to hormone balancers to beta-blockers and more. I also suffered with low back pains and like the headaches my symptoms were getting worse and more frequent. I was firmly stuck in a sickness paradigm and believed that I needed the medication to survive my own body. It took my own study, re-education, re-thinking, regular chiropractic care, trust, support and continual lifestyle choices to change and evolve this lifelong belief.
Chiropractic continues to inspire me and give me the tools to actively change and support my own health and lifestyle choices. For me chiropractic adjustments will always play a vital role in supporting the body to express better function and wellness. When combined with simple exercises, good nutrition and the awareness to think differently a different level of health becomes possible and sustainable.
I continually strive to provide excellent chiropractic care and appropriate lifestyle support to help anyone wishing to improve his or her own health and wellbeing. I have attended many postgraduate courses and seminars in adult, pregnancy, pediatrics, cranial and emotional techniques to continually learn from and for every individual that I see.
I am passionate about supporting each and every person that I see and actively aim to provide them with the understanding and confidence to make their own choices, easily and enjoyably so that they are empowered to make a lasting difference to their health and wellbeing.
I am incredibly grateful to work with so many different individuals and families in such a dynamic holistic profession. Together with the team at County Chiropractic, I look forward to being a part of your choice for health. Call 01392 208496 today to get started.
